If a DH who only plays on one side of the field and almost everyday can't win an MVP(like David Ortiz in 05) can't win a MVP, then no way a pitcher who plays once every five days deserve to win a MVP!

i can agree to a point... but in 05, you had a comparable hitter to him, that at the time, played decent defense. if the next nearest choice, wasnt close on offense, im sure ortiz wouldve got it [plus, numbers wise, rodriguez was a better hitter than ortiz anyway... ops, war, everything except rbis really]

this season, the best offensive opposition to this pick, was on a team that finished 4th. he was the nearest comparable pick, bautista that is... he was 8.5 wins more valuable than his replacement. and so was verlander. i realize some people dont stick with or put any stock into those stats... i do alas. thats my argument and ill stick to it.

It's valid, at least with the ARod-Ortiz argument. Look, a lot of us agree that pitchers shouldn't win MVPs, but it does sporadically happen and he had a killer year. I'm not going to lose sleep over the award selection.Besides, what player will we remember most from 2011 based on performance? Verlander (and then maybe Bats).

And thats my point in a nutshell. I like the pick because there was no strong offensive player that lead his team and if it wasn't for Verlander there is no way Detroit makes it to the ALCS... or maybe even playoffs!

Finished 4th in one of the best divisions in all of baseball and still finished at .500 all while playing multiple positions. Verlander's season was the 44th best best for a pitcher since Clemens last one the MVP. I feel Ellsbury and Bautista got screwed on this one.

They won the division by 15 games.

Ellsbury's numbers were better than Bautista and was the only Red Sox to show up in September... he got robbed... You can't play 34 times and be the most valuable player... sorry just isn't the case

Still don't understand this move. I'll still be a staunch Jose defender for this year, and will continue to be.

On the plus side, where did Vernon Wells finish?

At the end of the day the only number that matters to me is 34, the number of games he played in, that's not half of a season, that's less than a quarter of a whole seasons worth of games! That's 21% of the total number of games he played in if anyone cares to know.
