Papi says Pedro will pitch again

“He will," the Red Sox DH said at Yankee Stadium. "Somebody will need him at one point. At some point."

Ortiz, who called Martinez "like a father to me," said he spoke to the pitcher mid-to-late last month. The slugger said Martinez was then working out in the Dominican Republic and Miami. Ortiz said Martinez "wasn't really talking to [any teams] at the time."

Given that Pedro finished the season strong last fall, and seems ready for a return, mentioning it after throwing out the first pitch for the Red Sox in April. I say it's almost a certain fact that Pedro will be on the mound for someone this season.

Before one of the Dominican Republic's recent World Baseball Classic games, Pedro Martinez told Tom Lasorda and scouting advisor Ralph Avila he wanted to finish his career where it started, with the Dodgers.

"That's what he said," said Lasorda, Martinez's former manager. "I don't know, it was just conversation."

I wanted him last year and I still do this year, but I doubt he wants to be a Dodger ever again. At least not for what McBroke would be willing to pay him.

Pedro is like four years older than Ortiz, talk about setting your expectations of a wise father figure low.

But I fully expect him to pitch this season, somewhere. The only question is what will he be able to demand.
