Re: Not so fast: Peavy moved to ChiSox

USA Today's Bob Nightengale, via Twitter, says the White Sox confirmed they just got Peavy. Brock agrees - Peavy approved the trade this time. Peavy is owed $56MM through 2012, or $74MM through 2013 if the Sox exercise his option.

    The full deal, via Rotoworld.com

According to MLB.com's Corey Brock, the Padres have dealt injured ace Jake Peavy to the White Sox for left-handers Aaron Poreda and Clayton Richard, and right-handers Adam Russell and Dexter Carter.

Leave it to White Sox GM Kenny Williams to sit quietly during the weeks leading up to the trade deadline, only to make a major splash in the final seconds. Poreda was in the original deal that Peavy vetoed back in May, but Richard was not. So it seems the San Diego ace only sweetened the Padres' haul by rejecting the initial proposal. Peavy signed off on the deal this time. Jul. 31 - 4:30 pm et
Good deal for the Pads...Richard isn't pitching as well he was the the first time it was nearly made, but Poreda is a legit ace going to a pitcher's park. And if Peavy plays again this year, this trumps ANYTHING the Tigers and Twins were going to do, anyway.

So much for my delusional hope of a dominant Peavy-CY-Latos 1-2-3 punch next year.

The potential CY-Poreda-Latos-Richard list as a 1-2-3-4 could be just as good. I mean, maybe I'm overstepping on Poreda's potential a little bit, but good-to-great stuff + pitcher''s park normally = win.

    I sure hope you're right.

I think I recall reading a scouting report on Poreda the last time this deal almost happened that said he was a "solid #3 or 4" ceiling and not being pleased with that.

Re: Not so fast: Peavy moved to ChiSox

I think the Padres have a number of interesting arms, including Gallagher & Carillo, as well as the dudes from the White Sox now...

It just seems like they really do not have a guy with #1 potential. I'd say if Poreda reaches potential, he'll be a #2 or #3 type of guy. I don't think of him as a #1 starter. Richards, #3 or #4, Petco can only help...

I'm really not sure how far Carillo has bounced back, only that he went down with TJ about a yr or two ago (seems like longer maybe).

Gallagher is a nice pitcher, he flashed potential with the Cubs before we traded him and I know he's pretty young-- to get him for Hairston as a PTBNL was a good deal. But again.. he seems more like a middle of the rotation type of guy.

Chris Young has never been able to stay healthy enough to be considered an ace.

I don't know much about Matos admittedly.

So have Paul Wilson, Bill Pulsipher, Jason Isringhausen, Ryan Anderson, Greg Miller, and others.

    Just sayin....

Nah, but there's every chance (especially in the NL, with PetCo, that Latos will reach at least a good portion of his potential.

I didn't call him an ace.

Nick said he didn't think anyone had #1 potential and I pointed out someone who does.

    I gotcha. You're right. I'm just bitter.

By the way it's gotta be nice for your Padres to finally play a team with an uglier lineup than theirs, huh?

Latos does have #1 potential, and is showing that already.....what's really nice is that he's still learning, and will only get even better......Wynn Pelzer is a name every Padre fan needs to learn, Adys Portillo as well......both of these guys are top of the rotation types of arms as well......and Pelzer isn't too far away, while Portillo is still about 2-3 years depending on his growth rate

Re: Not so fast: Peavy moved to ChiSox

Poreda has filthy stuff, he just needs to find the control to make it work, as well as develop his changeup to be a potent enough 3rd pitch to get him by as a starter. Carter IMO is the best pure talent the Padres got in the deal, he also needs to develop a change, but he strikes hitters out at alarming rates, he could end up the best piece of this deal on the Padres end. On the White Sox end, Peavy is a legit ace, and gives the White Sox one of, if not the, best top 4 of a rotation in all of baseball with Buehrle, Danks, and Floyd. That said, I think this trade helps the White Sox much more in 2010 and beyond than it does this year, not only for the obviously reason of having a pitcher the caliber of Peavy in their rotation, but also because the White Sox got a pitcher of that caliber without giving up any of the pieces that will factor into the team's near future on the farm, such as Dan Hudson, Tyler Flowers, and Jordan Danks, all 3 of whom could be playing for the White Sox at some point in 2010 (I think Hudson wins the 5th starter job in ST next year and never looks back, with Flowers and Danks getting the call some time in mid 2010). All in all, I think it's a good trade for both sides that allows both to continue along the path they're trying to stay on at the moment.
