    A's A's Want Giambi Back?

Both Mark Ellis and Eric Chavez said Sunday that the A's should sign impending free agent Jason Giambi.
Oakland is said to be in the market for a big bat and Giambi hit .247/.373/.502 with 32 homers and 96 RBI in his final season in New York. He was drafted by the A's and won an MVP award in Oakland before leaving as a free agent following the 2001 season.
Very interesting coming from Chavez and Ellis. I don't see Bean going after Giambi unless he takes a hefty paycut. Since the A's are in a somewhat rebuilding mode, Giambi just doesn't make sense.

Fortunately, Ellis and Chavez aren't running the team.

It would make sense for Giambi to go back to Oakland, its not a coincidence that he had his better years with Oakland than he did with the NYY.

He was also younger and under less pressure.
But this wouldn't be so bad if it was a cheap deal or a 1 year flyer like Frank Thomas a couple years ago.

Where is he going to play? 1B instead of Barton? DH instead of Cust? Or force Cust to the OF where he's horrible and sit one of Sweeney, Buck, Gonzalez? I just don't see it happening and doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

The A's are committed to rebuilding. They resigned Ellis to a short deal and it will expire around the time Cardenas is ready. Chavez isn't going anywhere due to his contract. They traded Kotsay. Thomas and Mike Sweeney are gone. Embree walked. They're obviously going for youth and trying to build the team toward the new stadium. I just don't see Giambi as part of that even for a 1-year deal. He'll probably want a longer contract anyway. Time will tell I suppose, but I'll be shocked and disappointed if the A's go after him.

I think Prov hit the nail on the head there. We'd have to move a lot of guys around in order to accomodate him, plus acquiring him would go against the whole "go younger" thing. But then again, Barton didn't have a very good first full season, and he could very well be on the move with another player (namely Street). But even still, I doubt that'll happen.
