    Cubs Edmonds To The Cubs?

"Could the Cubs be interested in signing center fielder Jim Edmonds, just released by the Padres after hitting .178 and struggling in the field? They are exploring the possibility, according to some in the know. Manager Lou Piniella long has desired another left-handed bat to go with Kosuke Fukudome. Felix Pie has been unreliable. Signing Edmonds could allow the Cubs to send Pie to Triple-A Iowa for steady work. Asked about the possibility of a left-handed bat being added, Piniella said, "We'll just have to see what happens.""
If the Cubs did acquire Edmonds, they would have to put him in LF. He looked awful in CF for the Padres this season but maybe he could do better with less ground to cover in Wrigley. I doubt it but maybe. Soriano or Fukudome would have to go to CF and Edmonds take one of the corner spots. Another Cardinal star going to the enemy possibly.

I don't see it. I mean, the Cubs should be very confident with where they're at right now. Adding Edmonds will almost force them to start him, and whoever gets benched will not be happy(and will be wasting their talent, which at this point is superior to Edmonds')

good lord, soriano is bad enough in left. we all saw what happened with him in centerfield last year. he struggled than got himself hurt.

He's not the bat they need. Besides, that'll work it's way down into cutting into Theriot and Cedeno time. Boooo-hiss at that.

Well...Edmonds is done. The Cards knew that and the Padres just found it out. so yeah, I think the Cubs should sign him and start him every game this season. lol

I don't think any team is dumb enough to put too much into Jim Edmonds at this point.

That's the point, Edmonds will cost next to nothing. I can see them do it and him split time with Johnson.

    Re: Edmonds To The Cubs?

I wouldn't. He is no better than Johnson, and probably significantly worse at this point. He will cost a major league contract, probably 1 million minimum, too much for a guy to hit .170

    Re: Edmonds To The Cubs?

He will cost the same as Frank Thomas and the Cubs need a lefty which is the only reason Edmonds is brought up. Johnson is not a lefty.

Look at his home and away splits

    avg obp slg
    home .091 .139 .121
    away .228 .333 .298

How much are his struggles related to Petco park? Its not a coincidence that his numbers are drastically better on the road.

    Re: Edmonds To The Cubs?

This is true. But It's not like he's tearing it up on the road. Not enough to justify signing him. At least not if you ask me
