    Rios Getting Six Year Deal

The Blue Jays are close to signing Alex Rios to a six-year deal worth $65 million, according to FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal.
An option could make the contract worth $80 million. Rosenthal says the deal would start with the 2009 season, so it sounds about right as far as money. Rios is probably going to be due at least $18 million in his final two seasons of arbitration, so the Jays would get his first four years of free agency for under $50 million. As athletic as he is, it's easy to see him aging particularly well and lasting into his mid-30s as a fine corner outfielder.
Great signing for a good ball player. I would have loved to see Rios in a Giants uniform but not for Lincecum. Rios is making less than Aaron Rowand too He's 27 and only getting better. Jays fans should be very happy that got this guy for so cheap.

Wow...considering what they signed Wells for, that's a fantastically cheap deal.
I did a lot of good things as a sim league GM.

Ah, give me something clever to say here.

    globesports.com: Jays, Rios getting closer

    ROBERT MACLEOD

    From Monday's Globe and Mail

    March 30, 2008 at 12:54 PM EDT

NEW YORK — The deal to lock up Toronto Blue Jays right fielder Alex Rios long term is close to getting done.

"It looks better today than it did yesterday," Paul Kinzer, Rios's agent, said yesterday in a telephone interview.

"It has to get done," Kinzer added. "Both sides want it done before the opener."

The Blue Jays begin the 2008 season today with a game against the New York Yankees.

General manager J.P. Ricciardi had set today as the deadline for any deal as he does not want negotiations to be a distraction during the regular season.

"Just trying to iron some things out," is how Ricciardi termed the negotiations. The GM said he was "cautiously" optimistic that an agreement could be reached.

The deal is reportedly a six-year extension worth $65-million (U.S.) that would begin with the 2009 season. It would also include an option for 2015 that could push the contract's value to more than $80-million.

Kinzer said the outstanding issues are related to money and terms.

Last season, Rios hit .297, had 24 home runs and batted in 85 runs in 161 games.

Hopefully it gets done very soon, the deadline was set for today, which is likely just another lie by J.P. Ricciardi
