The agent for lefty David Wells dialed the Cardinals recently to see whether the team was interested in adding the veteran to an unsettled rotation.
Wells, 44, has been working out and would like to pitch another season after going 4-1 with a 4.65 ERA in seven starts for the Dodgers at the end of last season. The Cardinals' interest was tepid.
"He'd like to continue his career and felt that he would be a perfect stopgap for them as they got their guys healthy and ready," said agent Gregg Clifton.
"At this point, the Cardinals seem like they want to see how their younger guys look at camp."
The Cardinals, while braced for possibly needing a starter, prefer to wait to dive into the free-agent pool until seeing in-house candidates pitch in games.
The current stance within the organization is that the free agents available do not offer more innings or a substantial quality upgrade over the three chief contenders — Anthony Reyes, Brad Thompson and Todd Wellemeyer. The Cardinals are keeping tabs on several free agents.
