Were the rosters really all that much different?

I mean, we started this debate talking about how the minor changes the Padres just made to their roster aren't going to make much of a difference and now you're taking a complete 180 on me and suggesting that the regular season outcomes don't mean anything to support my argument on the grounds of minor differences in both teams' rosters?

Last year's Padres offense was better than this year's, but not by much.

This year's Padres offense is better than 2005's, but not by much.

Rosters are set by October, not in May. Did any rosters moves the Cards made last year propel them into the playoffs last year? Obviously not. You are trying to compare 6 regular season games to the playoffs. Huge difference and no 180!

Furthermore, I just effectively eliminated one of your two prime examples and am now forced to ask you how one 5 game series dictates exactly how any other division series will play out.

Same makeup as in great pitching, no offense.

There's a huge difference between 6 regular season games and 4 playoff games?

I mean, I realize the difference in importance here, don't get me wrong, but that's not what we're talking about.

We're talking about how one make up of a team can fare against another.

I'd argue that the 2005 Padres had average pitching and shitty offense

shitty pitching and shitty offense in the playoffs.

I no longer even consider that a valid comparison to this year's Padres the more I think about it.

After Jake Peavy and Adam Eaton their pitching wasn't that good. The pen was pretty good.

And even with the two front line starters, this year's version of Jake is better than that year's and Chris Young is leaps and bounds better than Eaton was.

Hell, 2007 Chris Young is better than 2005 Jake Peavy

    So what?

If you give me a shitty offense and half ass decent pitching of course they're not going to do shit in the playoffs.

If the 2007 Padres had Jake Peavy, Adam Eaton, Woody Williams on the worst year of his career, Pedro Astacio and Chan Ho Park instead of Jake, CY, Greg Maddux, David Wells, and Germano I wouldn't even be arguing with you right now.

And no need to nit pick. You're insinuating that the outcome will be the same because of one series.

It's not one series, it's two and before that they weren't getting into the playoffs with the same makeup. NOTHING HAS CHANGED! I'm not saying this is what will happen but what I think will happen and you know that but yet keep going on. You say give me a shitty offense and a half ass decent pitching staff and they don't win in the playoffs when its a whole new ballgame and regular season is meaningless at that point. I say give me a team with a shitty offense and great pitching staff and the same the will happen 9 times out of 10.
