Re: Ensberg to the Padres! Another mediocre hitter!

Padres definitely improved their bench but as far as doing anything of note, I don't see it. None of these guys is going to really push them into to the playoffs. Even if they did, they aren't going very far. Mission is right about them doing good things without having to give up anything but not one move looks to halp beyond this season and none are impact players. One thing Mission is wrong about is saying Ensberg was one of the most feared hitters in baseball.

Why is everyone, Padres fans and other teams fans alike, convinced that the Padres have a realistic shot at winning the toughest division the NL has to offer....but won't go anywhere in the playoffs after doing so?

Because other teams have better offenses than teams in the NL West.

But the NL west has better teams than other divisions in the NL

Yes but it's the playoffs we are talking about. Best teams don't always win especially when they have a shitty offense. Scoring two runs a game in the playoffs isn't going to get you far.

I'm not saying the Padres will win in the playoffs, I'm simply questioning the implication that they will lose in the playoffs that seems to be put forth by everyone.

And scoring 2 runs in the playoffs will get you everywhere if you only give up 1.

True on that last statement but never the case. The best of the best can score runs or else they wouldn't be there. From the moves the Padres made, why should anyone think differently? No impact players to get them to that next level.

It just baffles me how someone can think the Padres can win the best division in the NL against the toughest competition (4th place team in playoff contention and all....) but think it's a given that they'll lose to the lesser competition who's hitting more off lesser pitching to win their divisions.

Whatever, though, whatever happens happens. Anyone who makes the playoffs has just as legit a shot as anyone else who does. The Cardinals proved that last year.

First off, I still think the Dodgers will win the West. Secondly, the Padres are 14th in team OPS. Padres have the pitching but against a good offense, pitching isn't enough.

Re: Ensberg to the Padres! Another mediocre hitter!

but good hitting is enough against good pitching?

There is no dead set equation that makes one team anymore of a lock against any other team, regular season or playoffs.

The Padres have beat the best the NL has had to offer, they're certainly capable of doing so in the playoffs.

Am I saying they will? Not necessarily, but I think they have a much better shot at it than most everyone wants to give them credit for.

Yes it is when the other team can't score.

Of course you think that, you're a Pads fan. All I'm saying is that none of these moves did anything to push this Pads team to the next level.

If the team can prevent the other team from scoring anything 1 or 2 runs is all you need.

I don't understand how this is a foreign concept to you.

No, I think that because if a team is in the playoffs they have every bit as legit a shot as winning it as anyone else.

I'd say that if we were talking about the Rockies.

The debate in this thread no longer has anything to do with your assessment of the Padres' recent moves and everything to do with a team's ability to win in the playoffs if their strength is pitching but they lack offense.

It's not foreign just unlikely. If you have good pitching and a shitty offense and you are playing a team with a good offense and average pitching, who wins? Pretty simple to me. The more balanced team does. Why haven't the Padres won the past couple of season in the first round with good pitching? Oh yeah, it's because they can't score runs!! In '06, the Padres were outscored 14-6 by the Cards. In '05, 21-11. Get where I'm going? I hope so because I am done discussing the obvious with you.

The Padres pitching downright sucked in the playoffs last year. Had they pitched the same way they would've done more.

Furthermore, the Cardinals offense pretty much sucked in the playoffs last year. They won the World Series off pitchers having some of the best games of their collective careers.

Padres had the best staff last year and a horrible offense last year and where did it get them? The Cards offense did not suck in last year's playoffs by the way. You are on your way to making my point which is good to see
