    Wright is wrong

According to several published reports, the Orioles are extremely close to finalizing a deal for right-hander Jaret Wright, who pitched for the Yankees last season. Baltimore is apparently poised to send reliever Chris Britton to New York in exchange for Wright and some cash considerations.
Why do teams insist on letting the Yankees off the hook?

Orioles acquired RHP Jaret Wright and cash from the Yankees for RHP Chris Britton.
How much could Wright have possibly cost as a free agent? Our guess is that he would have made right around the $3 million the Orioles are set to pay him here. Let's just say he would have cost $5 million instead. Are the Orioles so out of touch regarding the value of solid relievers that they figured Britton was worth less than $2 million? Britton was set to make the minimum for at least two more years and he was six years away from free agency. To sign a reliever that's a better bet for 2007 will cost the team at least the $2 million it might have saved by making the trade. We've never been more convinced that Mike Flanagan is in over his head as a GM. Wright may well be a decent starter with Leo Mazzone guiding him again, but he could have been had for cash alone. There was no reason to give up talent, too.

I agree with that. Wright may become a decent pitcher again, but nothing is certain. The Yankees are likely very happy to be rid of him. To get some talent in return is quite a bonus.
