Sheffield traded to the Tigers; Tigers anally violated in deal

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/200...ers/index.html

Humberto Sanchez and Kevin Whelan is a niiice return for someone who's a dick and old and who wants a 3 year extension. Sanchez was the #6 prospect in the Tigers farm last year according to Baseball America, Whelan was #10.

Holy shit...wasn't Sanchez a Top 25 prospect at midseason last year with Tigers fans naming him as an overpayment for Abreu? Now it's him + a Top 10 system prospect for a disgruntled, declining COF?

    Why not just sign Nixon?

Bird in the hand is worth two in the bush? Plus Sheffield traditionally has been better able to stay healthy than Nixon.

Nixon hasnt played in more than 135 games since 2002, Sheff (besides this year) hasnt played in fewer games than that since 1998 (130 between Florida and LA)

I see both teams as being potentially screwed. The Tigers did give up too much for Sheffield who will be 38 with a bad thumb and shoulder. But the Yankees also made the Tigers' offense stronger. The Tigers eliminated the Yankees from the playoffs and the Tigers as of now still have much better pitching. Magglio and Sheffield will switch back and forth between DH and RF. I say its bad for both teams with the Yanks getting the better of it in the long run.

I see this as insurance in case Casey gets signed by another team. Sheff can play 1B.

However, I do agree with the title of the thread. Someone got their wrists handcuffed to their ankles.

I don't see any scenario in which Gary Sheffield insures Sean Casey.

Humberto Sanchez was projected to step into the Tiger rotation in 2007. A lot to spend for Sheff to pull a bunch of pitches just left of the fair pole.

The only way the yankees are screwed is if Humberto Sanchez opts to become a full time priest.

terrible deal by the Tigers...3 solid pitching prospects for an old, disgruntled hitter? Wow...maybe if this were Sheffield 5 or 6 years ago, but not today

As of right now, Tigers got the better end of the deal IMO, because they got a proven veteran, while the Yankees just got 2 prospects, who havent proven anything, untill they do anything the Tigers have the better end of the bargain.

Detroit may have gotten a proven veteran, but the yankees had no need for Sheffield, especially if he as going to be so bitter.

Detroit gets a proven run-producer. The Yankees get a pitcher ready for the bigs and a couple of guys that will need some more coaching. They are very talented, but a bit raw, IMO.
The Tigers will be better in 2007 with Sheff as their primary DH.
As has been said, Sheff was not happy in New York and needed a change of scenery. Going back to Jim Leyland -- the guy that got him a WS ring, should make him happy. The Yankees needed to get something for him, and did. Plus, they decrease their payroll dramatically.

$13 mil out of $200 mil or so is not a dramatic decrease...and you're crazy if you don't think they'll be spending a little money in free agency.
