Before or after Emilio Esteve becomes a stud prospect?

Sheffield is now locked up through age 40 for 13, 14, and 14 million per year. Coming off of wrist surgery, he's a dick, his hitting's been on the decline since that great 2003 with the Braves, he's got no defensive value so he's going to be locked into that DH spot no matter what (which I predict is going to bite them heavily in the second two years of the deal when Sheffield's not even worth batting at DH). All this "he's a proven run producer" talk is clearly overlooking the fact that Shef has declined very fast and that wrist surgery isn't going to help that any. He's a fantastic hitter historically but it's highly doubtful he returns to any kind of form to make it worth giving up arguably the best pitching prospect left in Detroit's strong farm, plus two other arms.

So, there have been other players who have been bitter/selfish for money aswell.

Daisuke Matsuzaka- this guy hasn't even pitched in the majors and asking for so much money like he's a ****ing HOFer or something.

Mark Prior- He was asking for like 8-10 million a year when he was drafted from USC, when he hasn't even pitched a game in the majors, was he not being bitter/selfish?

Roger Clemens- He only wanted to play with Houston so he can play on his own terms, so he doesn't have to travel on some road trips, top of that they gave 22 million for that, was he not being bitter/selfish there?

So all these guys get a free pass, but yet you guys are willing to criticize Sheff.

Matsuzaka has asked for no money yet, the Seibu Lions are the ones asking for the money right now.

I'm sorry McKain but I can't see how Sheffield has been on the decline since 2003 because he hasn't. BA is the only stat but it is still around .300. The power numbers are still there. Last year was his only bad year because he only played in what 40 games? Sheffield when healthy still hits the ball harder than anyone in the Majors. The Yanks still made the Tigers better which is probably not a good idea.

The injuries are more frequent and so are his complaints. Great player for what appeared to be a team with solid chemistry.

The Tigers better hope he pulls the ball in that ballpark.

    Crap deal IMO for Detroit.

This is a decline, but nothing dramatic. I'd take the 2005 stats for the next 3 years.

You don't think a 130 OPS drop is significant?

And the odds of getting the 2005 stats for the next three years are, well, miniscule.

Sheffield is a manimal. But he can't really throw correctly, and he had trouble lifting his arm to catch.

Plus, he's a dick. And I don't see him shedding his disgruntled attitude for the Tigers like he did for the Yankees.

And he is on a decline, and can only hit, albeit not solidly. I don't think that's worth 13+ million...

Like I said the power numbers (HRs and RBI) are still there and the guy hits harder than anyone in the game.
