    Re: Rebuilding strategies

It took a while to rebuild the Cards due to multiple SPs losing talent to the point they were miminal back of the bullpen fodder (see Lazaro Jimenez, Jerome Vandermark, Ramon Rosario who went from 10-8-10, 9-8-10, 10-10-8 to 10-4-6, 9-5-9, 8-8-4). Didn't have the money to dish on a FA until I signed Capra 4 seasons ago. Only Todd Crissman and Magglio Gonzalez survived the rebuilding process on the pitching side.

It doesn't matter how people get to competing. If they get there then its a damn success. By staying patient, I was able to put together a strong team that has won championships. I still get people that question my sanity with moves but they work out most of the time. Let people find their method to their own maddness.

    Re: Rebuilding strategies

You also have to take into account that I was still fairly new at this stuff when I took over and I've been trying to do this on my own. I feel like if I ask for too much advice from more experienced GMs that it may as well be them running my team. I'll ask for advice on occasion, but for the most part I want to make my own decisions and live or die with them.

As I said before, I didn't take over the Padres and consciously decide that I'm going to sit on the team for 10 sim-years and collect draft picks. There was multiple years where I tried to make a few big signings in free agency with the intent of seeing what happens and trading them if I lose anyway. But what usually happened is either the person didn't like my organization or someone else signed him for much more than I was willing to spend in a non-contending season.

Kendry Hernandez is a good example of somebody I signed that I didn't run into these problems with.

It's really not that hard. Some GM's think of "rebuilding" as this colossal project that takes them out of contention for a decade. It doesn't need to be.
