I like the route I took to get my team back in the playoffs. I had no money, so all I could do is make trades (Renz, Duque, Capra), draft good (Passeau, Hubbell), and I had my team back in the playoffs this past season. it only took me 3 years of missing to get back into the playoffs to. I think that is pretty impressive considering the money situation my team was in.

The funny thing about trading is you have to have valuable trade commodities to make them.

The team actually had three decent players, though, now that I think of it. Armador Trevino, David Li, and Aurthur Solis.

I ended up swapping Trevino and Li for Albert Schuck, William Scheaffer, and Leo Santoro, all of which is on my major league squad now (although the latter two kinda suck). I traded Solis for St Louis' 1st round pick, which ended up being Johnny Allen.

Zod, listen to what Leo is saying. You're going to get critiqued regardless of which path you take. While you have given out some contracts I wouldn't, you haven't ruined Free Agency for me.

Everyone has their own way of building a team. I've taken different routs in every team I've controlled. I've been the guy who developed a couple prospects and overpaid in free agency(HSL), and I've also been the guy who rebuilt over a decade with draft picks and trades(MSL). And vice versa.

Try whatever you want. Eventually you'll get results which will guide you in the right direction. Don't let the other GMs get to you.

Re: 2041 Free Agency - AKA: the Happy Birthday Leo thread.

First off, Let me apologize for my outburst. Zito absolutely hates everything I do and it finally boiled over. Typically I take things light hearted, but was running on 30 min of sleep overnight.

I want to thank everyone that stepped up and said to ignore him. I cannot not even tell you by how much I overpaid. I thought I was 1-2 mil over, but using 2 years to kinda land them. I guess I was pretty wrong. But if my intentions were to attempt to sign and trade, would I really sign them purposely to such egregious contracts? I signed them to 2 years because I only had a short window. I'm making a couple decent trades (if they go through) that will go a long way. I have a #1 starter and a solid #3 hitter. I have components to place around these. I like to think I can win plenty more games than last year.

So I'm not going anywhere. I'm going to make mistakes for sure. But I gotta learn.

Thanks again to all! Good luck in the season!

Why not both? Oh that's right, it would require skill instead of tanking for 10 YEARS.

I'm sorry I'm not as good at this as you. The bottom line is I'm fielding complete rosters and the best players on my roster at their best positions. That's all that should be required to keep your panties on tight.

playing the best roster you have isn't tanking... ask the Rays how that worked out for them

In the interest of full disclosure and honesty I should point out that I really didn't pay much attention to the league until it moved over here, so the active strategy in rebuilding this franchise didn't really start until 2034.

Not that the team was in much better shape in 2034 than it was in the 2 or 3 sim-years prior when I technically took over the team while it was at SOC.

Like not handing out 8 digit contracts to declining vets in a vain effort to win 65-70 games to satisfy a principle, all the while needlessly blowing my finances?

Re: 2041 Free Agency - AKA: the Happy Birthday Leo thread.

I didn't take over the Padres and sit down and think "The best way I can fix this is do nothing for 10 sim-seasons and collect draft picks"

Yes, my mindset when taking over a team with absolutely no farm system and absolutely no major league talent was to ride out some shitty seasons to begin-with because, really, what else can you do in that situation?

But, as the years went on the free agency pool was always underwhelming (I think teams in this league seem to get their extensions in more than most leagues) and what little was there would either not like my organization or would end up signing someone else's ridiculous demands (as opposed to my reasonable offers)

I'm sorry, but I'm not going to dish out ridiculous overpriced contracts to aging vets when my team is not in line to compete. That makes absolutely no sense. I tried to sign free agents but it almost never happened with the turn-of-events.

or you could just do something like this.

    70-92
    (take over here)
    82-80
    98-64

Max Mendez was my best player (2.5). I had 0.0 prospects until I got my first round pick that season and the contraction draft pick (both things you had).

I did sign some mediocre players to some decent contracts. I spun them for better players. The better players were better.

It's that easy? All I have to do is win 82 games then 98? Damn, why didn't I think of that a long time ago?

Molina, for this season's sims I want the Padres to win 120 games. Make it happen.
