    free agent pool underwhelming?

    You didn't like

Scott Viola, Josue Bonilla, Robert Sperling, Homer Nelson, Hugh Willis?

If you would have signed any of these players, I would have been knocking at your door.

and those just being guys on my team I signed from FA who I can remember.

I had no contraction draft pick when I took over because there was no contraction going on at the time.

I did have a contraction draft pick at a much later point that I spun for David Flickenger (5.0 star prospect at the time) and Shane Harper (very good 4.5 prospect)

Flickinger has become a mediocre 5th starter after losing talent. Shane Harper, on the other hand, gained talent and looked promising until he had a random career ending injury.

Well, that's awesome. But I didn't have as much luck as you trying to sign free agents.

And in the realm of not signing vets and doing what Zodious did do you really think Zodious' signings are any good?

I signed Kendry to a more reasonable contract when he was younger and better. I now have Wes Ferrell to show for it, so that's not bad. Do you think Zodious is going to have as much luck trying to pawn off Kendry as I did with that contract and his declined ratings?

Would it not depend on what I signed them to?

We are, after-all, applauding Zodious' contracts here as a better approach than mine, are we not?

Are you going to be knocking at Zodious' door later this year for that Kendry contract?

Walter wasn't on my team when I took over, dipshit.

And he'll be 29 or 30 when I'm ready to compete.

I am aware of this. As I'm sure Captain Obvious is....but didn't you think at any time..."hmm this early 20s dominate pitcher sure would yield me a treasure trove of players that would exceed the value of this one player...because surely building my team solely around 1st round picks isn't a sound way of doing things"

Zodious is an idiot too. I'm just saying your way is just as shitty.

Actually, I did consider it at one point. But I decided I was close enough that I'd rather not trade him for younger, undeveloped players and push my contention year back that much further.

The last thing I want to do is get into an endless cycle where I draft-trade-draft-trade-draft-trade

You're acting like I've done nothing to bolster my farm other than draft in the first round.

    Wes Ferrell says hi.

My way just takes longer than some elitist GMs are apparently capable of doing.

Yes. My previous 3 rebuilding projects.

    2011- 80-82
    2012- 95-68

    2026- 75-87
    2027- 95-67

    2039- 80-82
    2040- 93-69

It's really not that hard. Some GM's think of "rebuilding" as this colossal project that takes them out of contention for a decade. It doesn't need to be.

    Re: Rebuilding strategies

how does highlighting your quick success with 75-80 win teams prove it can be done that quickly with a franchise as bad as the Padres were?

    Re: Rebuilding strategies

I had to rebuild once. Traded away a bunch of star players for younger players/prospects. Then went through a period of 6 or so mediocre seasons and haven't looked back since. Plus it got to the point where I just hated trading so now I just let my guys get old and die and try to fill the holes through FA or with my low picks.

Zodious is the GM of his team. He is entitled to making whatever kind of FA offers he feels is necessary, as long as they fall within the FA guidelines, and he is more than welcome to continue participating in this year's free agency. I am not going to take the opportunity away from him because some GM's don't like his signings.

As for this thread, I have no problem with a healthy debate, and most of this conversation has been civil, but I don't approve of the language, name-calling, or GM bashing. Eliminate these elements from the discussion and I have no problem leaving this thread open.
Integrity can accommodate the inadvertent error and the honest difference of opinion; it cannot accommodate deceit or subordination of principle.
