Did anyone see the fumble by Luck? They overturned it saying it was a pass. He was throwing it behind the line and slightly backwards. Isn't that a fumble regardless? I don't get it.

It was a tuck ruling call... saying the ball motion in his arm was going forward thus by rule its an incomplete pass, regardless of direction of where ball ends up

He already tucked it and then started to throw again. They said it was an incomplete pass. It should have been a fumble based on how they ruled it.

Former NFL ref Mike Periera (the guy on FOX explaining calls) explained it like this on twitter

Mike Pereira ‏@MikePereira On reversal, direction of the pass means nothing. His arm was started forward and then he got it and the ball went backward then incomplete.

Backward pass is a lateral though, isn't it? It should be a fumble regardless. I don't understand a lot of the calls these days. Pass interference calls on uncatchable balls thrown 10 rows deep in the stands, pushing receivers out of bounds after 5 yards when if in the middle of the field that would be illegal contact, and so on.

    uhh, wtf?

If a QB throws at a receiver backwards and it misses that's a fumble regardless.

So why does the "tuck rule" matter if the ball's going backward?

He had already tucked once. Then when he went to throw it again, he got hit. His arm wasn't coming forward yet. He was facing diagonal backwards. It should have been a fumble regardless. Fumble on the hit as it wasn't a pass and it wasn't a tuck. If it's a pass, then it's fumble because it went backwards behind the line. Also, there were no receivers in the area, only his left guard. Shouldn't that be intentional grounding / in the grass if it was a pass? So many things wrong with that play and it changed the course of the game. The Texans would have the ball at the 20 or so...instead, Indy keeps the ball, drives, and scores.

I tell ya, I haven't watched a ton of games this year, but the ones I have watched all have had bad calls...many of which favor the home team. It really makes it difficult to watch sometimes.

San Diego: where 14-2 gets you fired, but your successor survives into three straight years of missing the playoffs.

And it's ironic that Spanos fired Marty because he didn't want Marty's useless brother as defensive coach is now going to put his own useless son in charge of player personnel.

Because it's completely unheard of for an owner to slowly transfer control of his team to his kids. That never happens outside of San Diego.
