    Tigers Guillen Needs Microfracture Surgery

Carlos Guillen's knee surgery Friday was of the microfracture variety.
Microfracture surgery is about the worst kind possible, and it will keep Guillen from performing any activities for four months. A return date hasn't officially been announced, but given Guillen's previous injury history, a return to his previous form certainly isn't a given.
I really don't think we'll see Guillen in a MLB uniform again. Guillen turns 35 later this month and we've all seen how this surgery fares for NBA guys. It just doesn't look good for Guillen especially when his value is being a versatile player. I'm sure he will be happy with taking his $13 million next year and calling it a career.

Tough news for the Tigers. Guillen is an important member of their lineup, and may be out all of next season. This surgery takes a long time to recover from.

The Tigers are sending Carlos Guillen (knee) to Tampa-based physical therapist Jeremy Maddox.
Teammate Clete Thomas bounced back from microfracture surgery after working with the same physical therapist, so the Tigers are hoping his advice can get Guillen's rehab back on track. "He had some increased soreness when we restarted [his program] again," said Tigers head athletic trainer Kevin Rand. "It's just going to be one of those rehabs where you just have to treat him symptomatically. The symptoms allow you to progress his activity. When you have to back off, you have to back off." With no clear timetable for Guillen's return, Will Rhymes is set to see most of the playing time at second base in the early part of the season.
Looks like Guillen has a long way to go.

Could you imagine how ridiculous salaries would be if they weren't guaranteed?
