    Sad Joel Zumaya Injured Again?

He left tonight's game in obvious pain after throwing a 99 MPH fastball to Delmon Young. It looks like an elbow injury, but I'm not sure how serious it is.

Possibly season-threatening? He threw the pitch and went down grabbing his arm, looked to be in quite a bit of pain.

Yep. Its a bit early for that. Gerald Laird, the catcher, said he heard a pop after the pitch. It didn't look good at all.

Reminded me a little of Tony Saunders going down in agony many years ago. I cringed watching Zumaya's arm and hand just twitch like that. Definitely not good.

And I need to go find a reliever to pick up.

Yeah, that was nasty. He'll definitely miss some time and like Zito, I need to find a replacement reliever as well.

Broken bone in elbow -- he'll be out for the season, but should be back for spring training. Overall, not the worst news the Tigers could have gotten.

I don't understand how he can break a bone in his elbow unless throwing 99 mph doesn't come naturally to him anymore. I'm reminded of another non-contact injury: Blake Griffin fracturing his kneecap landing on his foot following a dunk. It's like these guys need to be attached to an IV pumping milk into their bones.

He snapped the bone by applying torque on it. Sometimes bones just don't take the pressures that pitchers put on them.

Buster Olney of ESPN.com hears that Joel Zumaya is progressing well in his rehab from elbow surgery.
Zumaya underwent surgery to repair a fracture in his throwing elbow back in July. The Tigers are told that the hard-throwing right-hander won't have any restrictions by the time spring training rolls around.
Good to hear a report on this flame thrower. Its always a pleasure to see a guy throw 100+.

That is scary. Hope he can get back to his normal pitching ways.

    Re: Joel Zumaya Injured Again?

Joel Zumaya will undergo exploratory surgery on his right elbow next Tuesday.
Zumaya originally intended to rehab the elbow for six weeks, but apparently something has changed. It would be presumptuous to speculate about a potential timetable for his return until the procedure is complete. There's no telling what they might find in there.
Just how many surgeries can this man take?
