MLB Lunch time chatter: A waiver deal that would make sense

Detroit did have the right idea to address concerns on defense in the offseason. It made all the sense in the world, seeing as it's finally a good trend thanks to Tampa Bay and Philadelphia. Unfortunately Detroit didn't exactly get players who could hit and field. Gerald Laird has a cannon and helps a great deal when runners are on, but even he's losing at bats to rookie Alex Avila. Even worse, have you seen Adam Everett hit? That would be a miracle. He's losing playing time to the legendary Ramon Santiago. Exactly.

With Detroit, you have a lot of power throughout the roster but a lot of big swingers that strike out a lot. For that, you really need more contact intertwined in the lineup. You don't get that with Laird or Everett. The offense has its potential, if there were more Placido Polanco types. I think there's an obvious stop gap fix that gives Detroit solid defense at short, but also gives Detroit a guy who makes a lot of contact and could take advantage of the spacious Comerica Ballpark. I think Cristian Guzman might do the trick for now.

Washington would have to waive him and Detroit would have to hope that no one else claims him. I think it would be good for Washington to unload salary, Guzman just isn't the type of player Washington really needs because of the lack of flair and power. I'm not saying they don't need veteran leadership, but who are we kidding, Guzman is better served on a contending type.

Guzy is not the player he was a few seasons ago when he was leading the AL in triples regularly, but he is a very solid SS. He is familiar with most of the AL pitching, so that would not be a big problem. He would offer some stability in the lineup and be a very good #8 hitter, possibly a #2 hitter.
All of this said, if he were to make it to the AL on the waiver-wire, someone like the Twins would grab him before the Tigers could do so.

He already cleared waivers so any team could go after him but i don't think washington is just going to hand him away... they'd have to get a decent return which is where the problem is right now
