Rumor Tigers, Red Sox Talk Lugo Trade?

The Boston Globe's Nick Carafdo believes the Tigers are "contemplating a deal with Boston to send either Nate Robertson or Dontrelle Willis for (Julio) Lugo, but some money issues must be resolved."
It's a deal that's been whispered for a while now, but it's still unclear if there's really anything to it. Lugo is owed $18 million over the next two years, while Robertson is due $17 million and Willis is set to earn $22 million. Especially after factoring in the cash, Robertson looks like the more attractive property. However, his ERA has gone from 3.84 in 2006 to 4.76 in 2007 to 6.35 last season.
Its hard to believe any team is interested in any player mentioned. Lugo is overpaid on top of being awful and Robertson's and Willis's ships have sunk. Willis should have never received an extension by the Tigers. Dumb. dumb move by Dumbrowski.

Re: Tigers, Red Sox Talk Lugo Trade?

SI.com's Jon Heyman believes the Red Sox and Tigers are still considering a swap of Julio Lugo and Dontrelle Willis.
It seems like a bad idea for Boston, and not just because Willis is guaranteed more money over the next two years ($22 million to $18 million). Lugo doesn't have all that far to bounce back to be an adequate regular, and he's definitely of use as a utilityman even if he doesn't rebound. Willis, on the other hand, was bad in 2007 and completely lost last season. Sure, he's only turning 27 in January, but that doesn't necessarily mean that he has anything left.
Maybe Willis need to start thinking about an Ankiel-like transformation.

Re: Tigers, Red Sox Talk Lugo Trade?

According to the Boston Herald, talks between the Tigers and Red Sox for Julio Lugo "have stalled."
The newspaper reports that the two teams were discussing a trade involving Lugo for either Dontrelle Willis or Nate Robertson, but "the possibility of a deal is now considered remote."
The Red Sox can actually do better than both men for Lugo if you can believe it.

Willis has potential?? He is declining at a minor league level. Lugo can play defense and hit .270.

He hit .268 last year. Has a lifetime average right around that. I have been watching baseball.
