    Monster Deal For Cabrera

A source told ESPN Deportes that the Tigers and Miguel Cabrera have agreed to an eight-year, $153.3 million contract extension through 2016.
It's possible, but it'd also hardly be the first time ESPN Deportes botched a reported contract. If this is true, Cabrera sold himself way too cheaply. To give up his last year of arbitration and seven years of free agency for just $19 million per year would be a terrible move on his part, or at least the MLBPA would have to feel that way.
If this is true, Dombrowski gets the GM of the Year Award if there is such a thing. Cabrera could have made a lot more but maybe he didn't want to help anchor the payroll. $19 million is nothing to laugh at and I am sure there are incentives that could make it over $20 mil/yr. You knew they were going to lock up Cabrera sooner or later. Interesting to see what they do with him in the future. Move him across the diamond? Back to the OF? DH? Whatever he deos he is going to hit like a badass.

I don't know what's worse, this contract or that quote stating that he "sold himself way too cheaply"

Not trying to say 19 mil is anything over the top extravagant in this day and age of baseball contracts, but, contrary to what LTR states, that quote makes it sound like 19 mil is something to laugh at.

But maybe I'm being a bit too picky with semantics. He probably could have gotten a bit more.

Yeah not only is it Tiger record, its also the 4th largest package ever given behind Alex Rodriguez ($275 million), Derek Jeter ($189 million) and Manny Ramirez ($160 million).

Cabrera could get more in free agency, but a guaranteed $19 million per year is still one hell of a safety net for him. The Tigers are at his mercy if there isn't a weight clause and a performance clause.

I wish I had a job where 19 million a year was "settling" . Good job by the Tigers though, gives them room to have a complete team.

I guess so!! Wonder if there was a weight claus in the contract. He is rather plump still.

I see him becoming the DH once Sheffeild is out of Detroit.

The guy seems to be getting heavier every year, and it's not muscle weight. He may eat himself out of third base.

I just hope for the Tigers' sake (okay, so I hope he does because he is now in the same division as my Indians), that he doesn't eat himself out of being a MLB player much like Bartolo Colon did with the Angels.

    That could be entertaining.

I don't think he'd object to becomg the team's DH however. He's a much better hitter than a fielder, and being the DH would let him focus on just hitting.

The only times he'd play 3rd base is when they Tigers play interleague games at NL stadiums and in the World Series when at the NL team's stadium.

    Re: Monster Deal For Cabrera

The Tigers' deal with Miguel Cabrera could be finalized Monday, but it's going to be a seven-year extension through 2015, not through 2016.
So, ESPN had it right than an agreement was in place, but their details never made much sense. Danny Knobler says the deal will be worth $152 million through 2015, including the $11.3 million Cabrera was already due this year. That means Cabrera would make just slightly more than $20 million per season over the remainder of the deal.
He will only be 33 when this deal is up.

The more important thing is how many pounds he will be when this deal is up.
