    Jones Resigns

Todd Jones and the Detroit Tigers agreed on a $7 million, one-year deal Monday, the closer wrote in an e-mail to The Associated Press.

Re-signing Jones became even more important when reliever Joel Zumaya had shoulder surgery, costing him at least the first half of the 2008 season.

Jones saved 38 games for the Tigers last season, a year after saving 37 games while helping them earn a postseason bid for the first time since 1987. He had four more in the postseason as Detroit reached the World Series. He turns 39 in April.

Over 15 seasons, the right-hander has 301 saves
Pretty much a no brainer. Zumaya went down and not much out there as far as closers go without giving a mulit year deal.

Todd Jones? Really? I thought the Tigers wanted to win. Why would you voluntarily bring back this guy? He sucks. What, Bob Wickman wasn't available?

No other closers out there would go for a one year deal. They don't need him as a closer when Zumaya comes back.
