Rockies Fuentes deal still in the works

    http://www.denverpost.com/rockies/ci_3270624

Two months after Brian Fuentes posted the finest season ever by a Rockies' closer, the team is pushing toward the finish line on a two-year contract that would likely include an option year as well.

Fuentes' representatives said strong progress has been made and Colorado GM Dan O'Dowd indicated talks would resume Monday at the winter meetings.

Fuentes, like Todd Helton, a strong candidate to be on Team USA in the World Baseball Classic, would be the first Rockies' reliever to receive a multi-year contract since 2000. He converted 31 of 34 saves last year and earned his first all-star berth.

DENVER -- All-Star closer Brian Fuentes and the Colorado Rockies agreed to a $5.5 million, two-year contract on Monday.

Fuentes, who had been eligible for salary arbitration, was a bright spot in Colorado's bullpen last season, earning 31 saves. The last-place Rockies blew 26 save chances, the second-highest total in the NL.

Entering his sixth major league season, Fuentes will earn $2 million next year and $3.5 million in 2007. The left-hander went 2-5 last season with a 2.91 ERA in 78 appearances.
Nice payday for Brian and Rockies have done well to build around him.

Fuentes was well worth the price of Jeff Cirillo.
