The Colorado Rockies claimed left-hander Jamie Cerda off waivers from Kansas City, the team's first step in its attempt to add left-handed depth to the bullpen battle in spring training.
Randy Williams is the only other left-handed reliever on the Rockies' 40-man roster other than closer Brian Fuentes.
"We've had good reports on him from when he was with the (New York) Mets and Royals," Rockies general manager Dan O'Dowd said.
"It's an area we are looking to build up."
The Rockies would like to carry two left-handers in addition to Fuentes. There have been early indications they might pursue veteran Terry Mulholland if he does not return to the Minnesota Twins.
This is what they must do. Get a lot of guys in camp and see who works out.
