Rockies acquired INF Jose Lopez from the Mariners for RHP Chaz Roe.
Roe did not post good numbers at the Triple-A level in 2010, but he's only 24 years old and has a far more promising future than Lopez, who finished with a .266/.297/.400 batting line this past season and was going to be non-tendered before Thursday's deadline. Maybe a change of scenery will help the 27-year-old Lopez. He does have a decent power stroke for an infielder and should rack up a few more dingers while playing half of his games at Coors Field. He is likely to steal time at second base from Eric Young Jr.
Why trade for a player that is going to be non-tendered anyway? The Cards did the same thing with Theriot earlier in the week. This deals make no sense to me. Lopez has some versatility but is viewed as a first baseman now since his defense is horrible anywhere else. Its not like the Rockies gave up much to get him but why give anything to get him? Looks like the Rockies found their righty to go along with Helton at first.
