According to the Denver Post, the Rockies have "told Ryan Spilborghs to play center field in Mexico this month to prepare for an everyday role."
The newspaper reports that the Rockies are looking to trade Willy Taveras, which would clear the path for Spilborghs to start in center field. A career .302/.374/.466 hitter with 21 homers, 109 RBI, 104 runs and 16 steals in 765 plate appearances, Spilborghs would be a nice sleeper if he emerges with an everyday job.
Taveras has been in trade rumors all offseason and I think a team will eventually trade for him. He has too much speed and he can hit. He has a career .283 BA but not the OBP everyone wants to see being at .331. Spilbroghs is a better all around hitter but is two years older than Willy. The Rockies could have an OF of Gonzalez/Smith, Spilborghs and Hawpe this season, a totally different look than last year. Reds, Padres, Yankees, Brewers (if Cameron is traded), A's and even his old team the Astros might be interested in Taveras.
