No. 1 starter C.C. Sabathia left the game with a strained right abdominal muscle after throwing 37 pitches. Sabathia suffered a similar injury last spring training and missed six weeks.
There was a silver lining to that injury because it happened on March 6. Sabathia was able to return to the rotation on April 17 and put together a solid season, going 15-10 in 31 starts.
The Indians have no such luxury this year. If Sabathia misses another six weeks, it will be carved out of the season. Sabathia will be examined today in Chicago.
Rookie right-hander Fausto Carmona would be the first candidate to replace Sabathia.
Carmona impressed manager Eric Wedge and the coaching staff by going 1-0 with a 0.75 ERA in four Grapefruit League appearances. The 6-5, 240-pound Carmona allowed one run in 12 innings.
He was scheduled to open the season at Class AAA Buffalo.
Sabathia, who pulled out of pitching for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic because he felt he wasn't ready, did not pitch well in spring training. He went 0-2 with a 6.66 ERA, allowing 18 earned runs and 28 hits in 24 1/3 innings. He allowed three homers in his last appearance before Sunday's season opener.
The 6-7 left-hander went through the White Sox with ease in the first two innings, looking almost as sharp as Chicago's Mark Buehrle. He started the third by walking Juan Uribe, and catcher Victor Martinez went to the mound.
Brian Anderson followed with a double that tipped off the glove of new left fielder Jason Michaels. Scott Podsednik's grounder to second scored Uribe, and Anderson scored on a bloop single by Tadahito Iguchi.
Trainer Lonnie Soloff and Wedge went to the mound. Sabathia tested the strained muscle with two throws from the mound before leaving the game.
Danny Graves relieved. He walked Jim Thome and gave up a sacrifice fly to Paul Konerko to give Chicago a 3-0 lead. An infield single by Jermaine Dye and a walk to A.J. Pierzynski loaded the bases, but Joe Crede hit into a force play to end the inning.
The Indians, with rain falling, rallied in the fourth to make it 3-3. Martinez doubled off the fence to score Travis Hafner from first. A good throw would have had Hafner, but Iguchi's relay sailed over Pierzynski's head. Hafner, expecting a collision, tumbled into the plate as Pierzynski jumped out of the path of the 240-pound Hafner at the last moment.
Eduardo Perez, in his first start with the Tribe, hit a two-run homer to left off Buehrle to tie it.
After Ronnie Belliard and Aaron Boone grounded out, the game was stopped because of rain.
