I hope we can hammer out a nice long-term deal with him, especially if he has a monster year like he did last year.CLEVELAND (AP) -- Shortstop Jhonny Peralta agreed to a one-year contract Thursday with the Cleveland Indians.
Peralta hit .292 with 24 home runs and 78 RBIs in 141 games last year in his first full season in the majors. His surprising season was one of the reasons the Indians became an unexpected playoff contender.
His .521 slugging percentage ranked second among American League shortstops and his 24 home runs set a single-season franchise record for a shortstop.
Peralta, 23, earned $316,700 last season. He was not eligible for salary arbitration, meaning he is likely to make only slightly more than the $327,000 minimum.
