    Indians looking at Nevin

    Indians chatter
    Monday, August 22, 2005
Clubhouse confidential: Texas is shopping Phil Nevin, a right-handed hitter who can play third and first base and hit a 420-foot homer against the Tribe last week.

The Indians aren't interested because they feel Nevin's numbers are declining, and he will make $10 million next year.

Nevin, 34, is hitting .242 (86-for-355) with 11 homers and 52 RBI with San Diego and Texas.

Rivalry: Aaron Boone, who played three seasons at Southern Cal, passed a reporter in the Indians clubhouse who was wearing an Ohio State University T- shirt.

"Put your pompoms away," Boone said with a laugh.

Stat of the day: Coco Crisp went 0-for-5 and stranded seven runners on Coco Crisp bobblehead night Saturday.

If they're not interested, then why are they looking at him?

Boone was good for the Reds. But I just don't understand he he fell of so quickly. Since that knee injury, he has not been the same player at all.

Getting Nevin would be horribly stupid. He is obviously in the decline of his career and is overpaid. There would be no need for us to pay his salary for very limited utility.

The fact that the Padres had to take Chan Ho Park and Sidney Ponson (in a nixed trade) in order to get someone to accept Nevin should tell you how dumb it'd be to acquire him.

And this is coming from one of Nevin's biggest supporters when he was in a Padres uniform

Heh, does that say that Nevin can play third base?

He plays third base about as well as Mike Piazza throws out basestealers.

I find it funny how many times it's insinuated that Nevin can play third base in artilcles about him.

Nevin can play third base about as much as Julio Franco can still play shortstop

It sucks how much Nevin has fallen off. I don't think this deal would be good either. Boone is a better fit than Nevin without a doubt.

The Indians are in need of a 1B with Broussard simply being a slightly above replacement level 1B, but much like the Red Sox (both have a great DH but no real 1B with the Sox using Petagine/Olerud/*shudder*Millar), they can live without one. Plus a mediocre one in Nevin is not worth a sizeable chunk of the Indians payroll.

Then out of fairness to the others you will be Slagathor.

I agree, Broussard isn't the best 1b, but he comes through in the clutch, plus the tribe has Aubrey coming up...

And if they have to, Hafner can play first a little.
