The Cleveland Indians activated pitcher Jake Westbrook from the 15-day disabled list on Sunday and plan to start him against the Washington Nationals. Westbrook has been on the shelf since May 7 with a strained left abdominal muscle. The veteran struggled this season with a record of 1-2 and a 7.90 earned run average in six starts before going down.
Westbrook made four minor league rehab starts to get ready for his return, the last of which came on June 18 at Triple-A Buffalo when he hurled four innings and allowed just one run.
The 29-year-old right-hander posted a 15-10 mark with a 4.17 ERA in 32 starts last season. He was an All-Star in 2004.
To make room for Westbrook on the roster, the Indians optioned pitcher Edward Mujica to Buffalo.
