Whats Wrong With The Indians?

The pitching is terrible. The hitting has been great so far. Sizemore, Hafner, Broussard, Boone, Blake, and Martinez (except for May) have had extremely good seasons with the bat. However, the pitchers- both starters and relievers, are struggling. In part, its due to just bad pitching. However, there was a chemistry the Indians pitchers had last year, and thats gone with how many players they let get away.

Starters:
Sabathia- 2.62
Westbrook- 4.77
Lee- 5.12
Byrd- 4.81
Johnson- 6.00

Relievers:
Wickman- 2.95
Cabrera- 6.20
Mota- 7.52
Betancourt- 3.57
Carmona- 5.02
Guthrie- 4.63
Miller- 5.63

Basically, the Indians had great pitching all around last year, and it made up for the fact that many of the hitters were still trying to hit their stride in the major league level.

This offseason, they lost Howry, Riske, Rhodes, Millwood, Elarton, and Sauerbeck (included only because he struggled this year.) That is quite a few players to lose, and they were replaced by Paul Byrd, Jason Johnson, Guillermo Mota, and pitchers from within, who are also struggling.

In attempting to improve their offense, which had young and improving players to begin with, the Indians let go of most of their bullpen, which allowed them to take the White Sox down to the wire last season. It's the front office's fault for not having faith with the young guys on offense, and leaving the pitching alone to be decimated with players leaving.

In my opinion the key factor in their early season struggles has been the dissapointing pitching of Lee & Westbrook.

It also doenst help that they are in such a tough division.

The inconsistenices of Lee and Westbrook, coupled with the crappy bullpen outside of Betacourt and Wickman has been a huge problem. Compared to Detroit and Chicago, they do need a couple of pitchers to get them to where they need to be right now.
