According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, Yonder Alonso underwent minor knee surgery after the season.
The Reds are calling it a "clean-up procedure" but have no plans for him to participate in winter ball. Alonso hit .330 with five home runs and 15 RBI over 46 games and 87 at-bats this season. The 24-year-old saw regular playing time in left field with Joey Votto at first base and is expected to compete for a starting job in the outfield next spring training.

I still don't see how the Reds haven't traded him yet. He would bring in something or somethings very good and useful. He doesn't belong in the OF.

If the rumors are true the Reds are getting low balled for him because other teams believe the Reds have no other options than to play him at 1b. They are trying him in LF to get his bat into the everyday lineup (and honestly I like it).

He's such a butcher out there in left. I don't blame the Reds for not taking low ball offers. His swing is pretty.

He's already said that the plan is for him to shed some excess weight and work in spring ball at LF. The reason he was so bad is that before this year he might have played a handful of games in LF (if that). He'll never be mistaken for Carl Crawford out there but Carlos Lee, Raul Ibanez, or Ryan Braun with that bad would be plenty good enough for the position.

CINCINNATI -- The Reds made a flurry of roster moves on Monday, most notably picking up the 2012 option on second baseman Brandon Phillips and declining closer Francisco Cordero's option.
Phillips' option was worth $12 million. So was Cordero's, but he will instead get a stipulated $1 million buyout and become a free agent.

Left-handed pitcher Matt Maloney was claimed off waivers by the Twins after the Reds also attempted to outright him.

Cordero is the Reds' fifth free-agent player, joining catcher Ramon Hernandez, left-hander Dontrelle Willis and shortstop Edgar Renteria, who entered the market over the weekend. Outfielder Fred Lewis became a free agent in early October after he finished the season in Louisville. While Lewis isn't likely to return, there was a possibility for Hernandez, Willis and Renteria to come back.

Reds signed OF Daryl Jones to a minor league contract.
Jones, 24, batted .260/.360/.400 with seven home runs, 35 RBI and three stolen bases in 100 games this season between Double-A Springfield and Triple-A Memphis. He has some tools, but probably isn't good enough at one particular thing to have a projectable future in the major leagues.

Looks like a 4th or 5th OFer for the Reds someday. In other news, Chapman will not being pitching Winter Ball this year after having shoulder soreness in the AFL.

The Reds are talking about a possible deal for Athletics closer Andrew Bailey, tweets ESPN's Buster Olney. The Reds have a need at the back end of their bullpen, with Francisco Cordero entertaining offers as a free agent. The Blue Jays are also known to have Bailey on the radar.

Bailey, 27, posted a 3.24 ERA, 8.9 K/9, 2.6 BB/9, 0.6 HR/9, and 37.1% groundball rate in 41 2/3 innings this year. He missed time with an oblique injury in 2010, and also had elbow surgery in September of that year. Effects of the procedure caused him to miss most of the first two months of the 2011 campaign.

Bailey is under team control through 2014, and we project him for a reasonable $3.5MM in 2012 as he'll be arbitration eligible for the first time.

Reds definitely have players to give to get Bailey and the A's definitely have a lot of holes to fill. Looks like it could be a good fit.

I've grabbed Bailey in quite a few Fantasy Leagues in the past. I like the prospects of having that guy. Cordero is coming off a GREAT season and would garner too much $$ for his talent level. If this goes down, for the right price, great move Cincy.

Brandon Phillips has made it no secret that he'd like a long-term contract extension from the Reds, and a few weeks ago we heard that the two sides were making progress towards a new deal. Earlier this afternoon, Phillips said (on Twitter) that he spoke to his agent and "it feels good to know that we're moving in the right direction" towards an extension.

The Red exercised Phillips' $12MM option for next season earlier this month, but the second baseman said he would consider it a "slap in the face" if the team picked up the option without talking about a new contract. He also indicated that he wouldn't give the team a hometown discount. Phillips, 30, hit .300/.353/.457 with 18 homers in 674 plate appearances for Cincinnati in 2011.

I wonder what his definition of a "long term contract" is.

Bruce Levine of ESPNChicago.com reports that the Cubs are close to a deal involving Sean Marshall and Travis Wood.
Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com was the first to report that the clubs were discussing a deal. However, Levine hears that the Cubs would receive two minor leaguers along with Wood. Marshall has a 2.45 ERA out of the bullpen since the start of the 2010 season, but he's basically a luxury for a team that is in rebuilding mode. The 29-year-old left-hander will hit free agency next offseason.

There had better be something more than a freaking lefty specialist. I still like Wood's potential, he may be a poor fit for our park but he's a lefty who has decent ceiling.

He's still a reliever, they are a dime a dozen, you trade relievers for everyday guys or starters not the other way around. They're just too flamable.
