I didn't understand it either to be frank. Votto, by many accounts, was pretty horrid at LF (worse than Dunn) in his limited stint at in AAA. And I don't think he is the better prospect than Smoak. Smoak is better defensively, a switch-hitter and according to many scouts he has just as much potential at the plate. Alonso is not a bad pick by any means, but he is a 1B only and will have to play there come his callup. Add in the fact that he is a lefty and the Reds will have the same problem that they do now.
