    Hairston up; Castro DFA

Just heard it from Lance on 1530 Homer.

Excellent move. Castro is useless and Hairston leads the IL in hitting. I'll take it.

As I said before, I love this move. But many have started wondering if this will become the single biggest reason for a possible Krivsky departure. He has put together some of the most ridiculous contracts.

22.5 million dollars are being payed to players who have been DFA or released (Castro, Cormier, Stanton) or do not have a place on the roster and could be either traded or released soon (Fogg, Arroyo, Ross, Hatteberg, Freel, Coffey, Patterson.)

Perhaps it is too early to include Bronson and Freel on this list. But these are still contracts paid to players that are not performing to what the average player with their same contracts are.

Hindsight is 20/20. I am not arguing for the moves or saying they were wise moves. But someone like Freel? He played electric, got a deal like a good utilityman with multi-position ability would get. Hatteberg? Slow start or not, Votto or not, prototypical 1B or not, the dude has raked for his contract. Cormier and Stanton were overvalued coming in, but I really doubt that anyone predicted they would have been as bad as they were.

His biggest problem is not in in the little deals, all GM's give out bad contracts to like a Cormier, but being overzealous in handing out deals for still unproven commodities. Arroyo and Ross are perfect examples, I understand he wanted to get a bargain deal with both of them, but Bronson especially (who had time on his deal left) was just rushing too much.

I guess we can chalk this up as a lesson that Krivsky still has to learn.

Patterson shouldnt count against Krivsky because I figure thats all Dusty's doing (same with Hairston).

With Cormier we were in the playoff hunt in 2005 with not a lot of really tradable pieces and when he was brought in had some era like 1.59 and a whip of 1.15 as a lefty specialist. Had to give him the extension to get him to wave the no trade clause (He had 5 yrs with the Phils) did Krivsky go too much but such is the business of baseball.

Castro got what like 2 yr deal for 2 mil? When guys coming off the scrap heap are getting more than that from FA. A bird in the hand?

Stanton is undefendable he had been very questionable leading up to that. And no reason to throw that much money and that many years at a guy that old and that much wear on the tires.

Unlike Stanton I don't feel Fogg was a "bad deal" for Krivsky. Fogg coming off an average season in one of the friendlier hitter parks was a nice contingency plan if Bailey, Volquez, and Cueto needed more time. Unfortunately for Fogg 2 of the 3 were ready and the third seems to be trying to kick the door in himself.

Arroyo I am not ready to write off yet. He tends to be a streaky pitcher at times. He could be a very useful guy in the rotation for a while even with the Big 3 knocking. Could Arroyo have waited a bit more on an extension? He's not an ace, he's a good #3 overall it is better to have too many pitchers than not enough as we have proven the last 10 years.

For what Hatteberg did for us last year he was and is a bargain. The extension was too good for us NOT to bring him back. He's been a real good guy to have, but Votto is the future and I am sure that when Gonzalez comes back Hatteberg will be given an oppertunity elsewhere to someone that needs a left handed bat to platoon at 1b or dh. And we will likely get something for him.

Wasn't Coffey a super 2 or something that meant he would have been arby eligible anyways?

For all these you have just as many finds as Kepp from KC, Phillips from Cle, etc. We can nit pick every gm for moves and find as many that go in the tank its when you find the diamonds that weigh a gm's worth.

Hairston is 3-3 so far tonight. But on the bad side, he made a bad base running mistake. What, does he think he plays for the Brewers or something?

Dang Slyder, you just shredded my original thoughts. Nice work.

You are right on all accounts here and this only makes me feel a lot better about Krivsky. I mean, we all hate the Stanton move and I still have to say that Castro was signed for too long. I can't believe I was even complaining about Hatteberg and Fogg. Yes, Fogg sucks right now and Hatteberg has struggled, but both of them were signed to really good contracts. Which still could benefit us in the trade market.

I just hope Arroyo isn't finished and I expect him to be inconsistant this season, but I hope that is all it is.

He did steal 3B though too. He has been impressive out the door so far. Is this guy for real?

I wouldnt hold your breath. He is a journeymen. He can play multiple positions (OF and 2B). Baker used him a lot in Chicago in CF and 2B.

Well he sure looks great tonight. Votto is also 3-3. Best offensive performance for this team this year.
