    Joe Blanton

The Cincinnati Enquirer confirms that the Athletics and Reds have discussed a deal for Joe Blanton.
The Athletics reportedly asked for a package including Homer Bailey or Johnny Cueto, plus Joey Votto and a third player, meaning they're going to have to tone down their request if a deal is to be worked out.
I'd personally stick it out with Bailey if that's what they are asking for. Reds need Votto and Blanton isn't the greatest pitcher in the world. Asking way too much for Blanton.

So why should the Reds pay more for a blah guy like Blanton than Beane got for a stud like Haren? I'd throw up repeatedly if we ended up paying up like that.

That would be the biggest rip off since Adrian Gonzalez/Chris Young for Akinori Otsuka/Adam Eaton if it went down.

Terrible. I expect Bailey to be even better than Blanton this year.

I asked this same question to Paul Daugherty on the radio the other night.

I think this would be a worse trade than the Twins made for Santana. That's way too much to give up for Blanton.

Beane doesn't have to do anything. He'll wait until he's bowled over or he'll keep him. Tough nuts. We just took the 2 best prospects from the White Sox for Swisher so I'm sure he's going to want at least 1 of your top guys. I don't see a need for Votto with Barton and others. I don't think he'll do it unless 1 of Bailey/Cueto are involved. It would probably take 2 more specs on top of that...1 solid and 1 decent. Blanton is under control for 3 more years I believe, too.

Of course he doesn't have to do anything, and let's hope he keeps his demands as high with the Reds so we can exit from the running for Blanton's services. From one small market team fan to another, it'll be nice for the A's to reload for the future (and the future stadium), but not at our expense.

    Re: Joe Blanton

well, it depends on how desperate the Reds are...or perhaps how convinced they are that they can contend this year. If they feel they can contend this year, then I could see them making a deal you'd be unhappy with. If, however, they feel they aren't quite there yet, then I don't think they'd give in. From what I've read though, the Reds appear to be the most serious.

I personally think it's Daugherty throwing stuff around. He also threw around stuff regarding Bedard around the time of the first "official" trade with Seattle.

i like the thinking.. i mean pitching.. but not this guy.. he had a huge ERA on the road last year.. i would expect GABP wouldn't help his ERA much..

Daugherty also was comparing pitchers based on their W/L record.

I want my Lancaster or Rosecrans reporting this news.
