Jeremy Affeldt signed to 1 year deal!

I have a sneaking suspicion that he will land in Cincinnati. Nothing soon and I don't have a source, but I feel like he is the type of target Krivsky is looking for. Would you guys be happy with us going after him?

Re: Not a rumor: Jeremy Affeldt?

I sure hope not because he is a valuable left hander in our bullpen. You can have our other left hander in the bullpen, Fuentes.

He seems to enjoy watching the Rockies pull within a run in game 3 and game 4 of the World Series and immediately coming in to crush whatever hope there is of a comeback by allowing more runs-just in time for Papelbon to riverdance his way to the mound to close it out.

    Grrrr.

I know your frustrations man. I feel you. But heck yeah, I would take Fuentes any day of the week (as long as it don't rain that day.) Preferably on a Wednesday.

Re: Not a rumor: Jeremy Affeldt?

In case some didn't know, Affeldt filed for free agency:

Left-handed Jeremy Affeldt and right-handed reliever Jorge Julio were the only two Rockies of the 57 major-leaguers to file for free agency Monday. Both had good seasons for Colorado. In Affeldt's case, he might have priced himself out of the Rockies' budget, posting a 3.51 ERA in 75 games. Affeldt, as he correctly pointed out, "is not a left-handed specialist," which will increase his value on the market.

Just about any team can use another lefty in the bullpen. Expect several teams that feel they have the ability to contend next season to come after him, old saying goes.. You can never have too much pitching.
"They asked me if I wanted the ball in Game 6, and I said yes. I'll always say yes. That's what I did with Jack McKeon. I told him, 'Let me see how I feel tomorrow.' I went out, did a long toss, came in and said, 'I'll pitch, I want it, I want to do it.' And it ended up working out." -Josh Beckett

Yes but for some reason, I truly believe Krivsky is after him in a big way.

Re: Not a rumor: Jeremy Affeldt?

Haha, I knew it! You have to admit I was pretty handy when thinking of this so long ago.

The Reds, striking a bargain with one of the top remaining free-agent pitchers, have reached preliminary agreement with left-hander Jeremy Affeldt on a one-year, $3 million contract, according to major-league sources.

The deal, pending a physical, will be the Reds' third significant pitching acquisition of the off-season. The team previously signed free-agent closer Francisco Cordero and acquired right-hander Edinson Volquez in a trade with the Rangers.
Affeldt, 28, will compete for a spot in the Reds' rotation after spending all of last season as a reliever with the Rockies. He has started in the past and the Reds' far greater need is in the rotation, where they are unsettled beyond right-handers Aaron Harang and Bronson Arroyo.
If Affeldt fails as a starter, the Reds always could return him to the bullpen. The team currently envisions right-hander David Weathers setting up for Cordero and already features three left-handed relievers — Mike Stanton, Bill Bray and Jon Coutlangus.
Either way, Affeldt stands to earn significant performance bonuses in his new contract, one source said. The deal, however, is for a much shorter term than the four years he originally desired.
Two older left-handed relievers received multi-year, free-agent contracts — J.C. Romero, 31, signed a three-year, $12 million deal with the Phillies, while Ron Mahay, 36, signed a two-year, $8 million deal with the Royals. Affeldt enjoyed a long-awaited breakthrough with the Rockies last season, going 4-3 with a 3.51 ERA in 59 innings. He is 25-27 with a 4.74 ERA in 286 career appearances, including 42 starts.
A young lefty with stuff that is versatile...I'll take it. And he comes cheap at 3 mill for one year. He pitched well in Coors field which makes since for the thinking that he can do the same at GABP.

I wonder if he will start or relieve?

That is a great point redsrbetter.

Congrats to you and your Reds on this signing.

I like it, as much as I want to admit it, because the Reds are in the same Division as the Brewers. But you already knew that! hahahaha..

Re: Jeremy Affeldt signed to 1 year deal!

    Thanks bro,

I think this signing only helps the team if he comes into the bullpen. But it sounds like he will be a starter unless someone like Bailey or Cueto can beat him out for a spot. In a perfect world, he would take Mike Stanton's spot in the pen.

Hey, they do have one player too many on the 40 man roster right now...

I wonder if this finishes the job for Wayne/Walt this offseason as well...

I agree, he needs to be in the bullpen.

I saw that the Reds picked up ex-Brewers Drew Anderson this past week.

Re: Jeremy Affeldt signed to 1 year deal!

A few notes from Jon Fay:

Krivsky wouldn't talk about Affeldt at all. Wouldn't even confrim the agreement. My guess Affeldt competes for the rotation. They've got Bray, Coutlangus and Stanton as lefties in the bullpen.
Livingston could go on the 60-day. You've got Richie Gardner, Alexander Smit, Ryan Hanigan, Chris Dickerson, Jeff Fiorentino and Drew Anderson on the 40-man. Nothing against any of them but there's space to be found.
I just hate the thought of him starting. Anyone remember Saarloos?

I think he just needs a shot to play. I believe he can play 1B as well!

He may be a good #5 OF, play 1B, DH in interleague, and pinch hit. Cant really tell you too much about him. Just know the Brewers did have some high hopes for him though.

Good to your Reds this season. It should be a fun year.
