He played awhile, held small coaching roles including a short interim position for the Pirates before Tracy I think and is an scout for us.

    Profile:

Peter Mackanin, Jr. (born August 1, 1951 in Chicago, Illinois) is a former Major League Baseball player and current coach.

Mackanin was drafted by the Washington Senators in the 1969 Major League Baseball Draft and made his debut with them in 1973, after they'd moved and become the Texas Rangers. In a 9-year career, he also played for the Montréal Expos, Philadelphia Phillies, and Minnesota Twins. In 548 games, he had a batting average of .226, 355 hits, 30 home runs, and 141 RBI.

After retiring as a player, Mackanin spent many years managing and coaching in the minor leagues. He became the Expos' Third Base Coach in 1997 and spent four years in that position. After returning to minor league managing for two years, he became Bench Coach for the Pittsburgh Pirates for the 2003 season. He served as interim Manager of the Pirates for the last month of the 2005 season, leading the team to a 12-14 record. He is currently the Advance Scout for the Cincinnati Reds.

He is a graduate of Brother Rice High School in Chicago.

Man is that the 1st time an advance scout get an interim managing position over any over the coaches?

I guess anything is better than going with what this organization has done in the past. Until I know better, I like this more than giving Dent the job.

Didn't Krivsky hire him as an advance scout? I think he did, but I am not too sure.

If so, I think the interim tag will stick and that he will go back to scouting once they find a replacement.

Perhaps the ownership has someone in mind, either now or in the offseason and wouldn't want to give a guy like Bucky Dent or Billy Hatcher the chance when they know they will take it away from them shortly (and likely tick them off as a result.)

    / wishful thinking

Ah, you're taking the wishful thinking pills as well. I heard gasoline is going to be a $1.10 tomorrow and for the rest of the summer.

I think they must have someone in mind. Krivsky sticks a scout in for now because he is a scout at heart and likes scouts and all that "circle of love" stuff.

    But seriously...finally...though definitely too late!!!

I hope they are thinking Davey Johnson, although a report out there says a Jocketty-LaRussa duo could potentially come, though that has been either confirmed/denied depending on who you listen to.

Well they got the first part done. Now you have to complete it with bringing in someone who has the potential of turning this team around.

    Davey, Girardi, who?

I think Davey is the most realistic option we can hope for based on who is currently out there right now.
