Reds sign 1b Andy Phillips and others

to a minor league contract and invite them all to spring training. Some of the others include RHP Jim Brower, INF Jolbert Cabrera, UT Andy Green. No big deal on the others, but I think the Andy Phillips pickup could be intriguing as the RH option at 1b.

rotoworld seems to think Keppinger will get ABs at 1B too:

Reds signed 1B Andy Phillips, RHP Jim Brower, LHP Adam Pettyjohn, INF Andy Green and INF Jolbert Cabrera to minor league contracts and invited them to spring training.
No one here should make the team. Green is back in the U.S. after flopping in Japan last year. It's surprising Phillips couldn't find a better fit. The Reds have indicated that they're going with Jeff Keppinger as their first baseman against left-handers. Unless an Edwin Encarnacion trade opens up third base for Keppinger to play regularly, then there's not going to be any room for Phillips on the bench.

    Andy Phillips is a beast.

I hate the Reds. First they take Bubba, now Andy?

While I sense your sarcasm in saying that Phillips is a beast, I do think he could be a viable fill in at 1b against lefties. He has had multiple AAA seasons of .300+ avg and 20+ homers, obviously at the age of 30 he hasn't shown enough, since he still only has limited action at the big league level. I can foresee the Reds playing both Hatteberg and Votto at the beginning of the season and if they are satisfied with Vottos' production, then trading Hatteberg away for more pitching and calling up Phillips for limited platoon AB's.

    I'm actually not being sarcastic.

Check out his splits when he was starting at 1B last year. He hit .300, was amazing in the clutch, and had a 1.000 fielding percentage.

I'm his #1 defender, I think he's amazing. Not to mention the fact that he was THE BEAST at Bama

Reds will win the NL Central next year with Andy.
I did a lot of good things as a sim league GM.

Ah, give me something clever to say here.

    Now that's sarcasm.

Reds will win if they bring back Bubba.

I don't want to win if we get Bubba back.
