Here's a little factoid about the Reds, they have 10 quality starts.
It breaks down like this:
Arroyo - 4 (counting today's start)
Harang - 2
Milton - 2
Ramirez - 1
Claussen - 1
Williams - 0

I believe they're 10-0 in those games, too.
John fay reported that the reds were 9-1 in quality starts giong into today, so we should have 11 unless he messed up.
i'm not at all surprised by how well arroyo has done (except at the plate), but i also wouldn't be surprised if he fell off a little later when the league learns him a little more.
The biggest thing about bronson to me is the change in situation. I was really surprised after the world series win in 2004 that bronson didn't get more credit, but that's the way fans/media are up here. If you're not a household name free agent, and not an MVP candidate, you're back page news. I really thought he was going to get a bump toward the top of their rotation when Pedro left, but instead he got moved further down.
I think that sort of thing messes with a guy's development, in the same way rushing someone through the minors or keeping them on the bench too long would. When a player is ready to take the next step, a club has to make the room for them to do that. The sox didn't do that, and he stagnated, and eventually fell off a little. Now he has the opportunity he needed.
It also has to do with the type of pitcher he is. His stuff is going to be as good as it is now for years to come, but he'll probably just keep getting better with hsi ability to locate pitches and change speeds. I know the nats aren't great, but he looked like he was toying with them. Some guys he'd never throw them anything harder than 74-75, and then come right back with 90 with movement. He was nasty.
Reds MVP Race
6: Arroyo, Harang
5: Kearns
4: Phillips
3: Dunn, Felo, Freel, Milton
2: Claussen, EdE, Griffey, Valentin
1: Aurilia, Hatteberg, Lizard, Larue, Shackelford
I would expect him to be solid against a team like the Nationals, but he dominated them like a top flight pitcher should do against a so-so team in a pitcher's park. I do agree it would be unrealistic to expect this kind of performance for the entire season (obviously), but every start is encouraging to him having a great year.
I would also say it helps when your not facing the yankees every third start
You missed one, Williams had a quality start in his first outing against the Pirates, That is the only game we lost when we got a QS.Originally Posted by redsfan28
Wow, what a series for Edwin. I beleive he had 6 RBI's if not more. I'm encouraged to see Arroyo's line today. Only 1 hit in 8 IP. Can't remember the last time a Reds pitcher started the year out like this.
I think you might have to go back to the 1990 season, but I could be wrong.

Yeah, I saw the highlights of Arroyo earlier and his breaking ball was sickening. It was starting inside and breaking a foot off the plate with pinpoint control.
Freel's awesome catch in center was the number three Web Gem and number eight on the Sportscenter top ten.
When's the last time Junior made either? 1998? MOVE HIM.
I agree, Arroyo's breaking stuff was flat out unhittable.
