According to Jorge Ebro of the El Nuevo Herald, the White Sox have signed Alexei Ramirez to a four-year, $32.5 million extension.
The contract also includes an option for a fifth year. The White Sox exercised Ramirez's $2.75 million option in December, but the two sides were expected to continue talks on an extension. The 29-year-old has a .283/.321/.430 batting line over this first three seasons in the big leagues. And even though we were hoping for more after his impressive rookie season, he has averaged 18 home runs and 72 RBI along the way while making some real strides defensively. It's a hefty commitment, but he should be a nice value if he is able to maintain the same production moving forward.
Alexei is one of the better SS's in the AL so this was definitely a smart move by the White Sox. He is getting paid just over $8 million/season so its right around where it should be. He's got speed but his stolen base rate is terrible. He really needs to work on that as well as his OBP but he's got the power and defense you like from a SS.
