    White Sox Guillen downplays deals

Guillen downplays any deals; Crede scratched

    By Mark Gonzales
    Tribune staff reporter

    July 5, 2005, 10:11 PM CDT

White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen continued to downplay trade rumors Tuesday.

"You look at the market, there's not much out there," said Guillen, who said he speaks daily with general manager Ken Williams and assistant GM Rick Hahn.

In reference to any speculation involving San Francisco's Jason Schmidt and Florida's A.J. Burnett, Guillen said this was the time of year when "you're going to see a White Sox scout at every park."

But for the second time in three series, an Arizona representative was present Tuesday night. This time it was special assistant Bob Gebhard, although the Diamondbacks have changed their coverage assignments so scouts are assigned to specific teams and not players.

Arizona is thirsting for relief help. Tampa Bay closer Danys Baez could be a better fit for Arizona than the Sox, who have plenty of relievers who have chipped in at various junctures of the season.

"If we need somebody to help this team, he has to be good on the field as well as off the field," Guillen said.

Former Sox GM Ron Schueler, a consultant for several major-league teams, also attended Tuesday's game.

On my way home last night, I heard a rumor on the radio that the ChiSox were possibly after Clemens. I am not sure how true this is, but that would make this already solid rotation insane. They must be after a bigtime starter as Schmidt and Clemens are mentioned so far. Look out for the Sox!

I'm guessing that would force Contreras to the pen.

The only way I could see Clemens being moved is to the Yankees.

I don't see them as a team to make a big move. Not seeing anything that makes sense for them.

I see no chance at Clemens going to the Sox.

As a previous poster said, I just don't see Williams making a big move for this team. The only thing that they could add is upgrade in the pitching department. Only chance the White Sox have of doing a deal is if the right one comes to them.
