Gavin Floyd, Four More Years

Right-hander Gavin Floyd and the Chicago White Sox agreed Sunday to a $15.5 million, four-year contract, a deal that includes a club option for 2013.

The 26-year-old was 17-8 with a 3.84 ERA for the White Sox last year and is 25-18 in 73 games over parts of five big league seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies and White Sox.

Floyd will make $750,000 this year, $2.75 million in 2010, $5 million in 2011 and $7 million in 2012, and the White Sox hold a $9.5 million option for 2013.

Floyd had been set to make $520,000 this year under a one-year deal agreed to Feb. 25. He would have been eligible for arbitration after this season and for free agency following the 2012 season.

Not bad, not bad at all. I for one was wrong about the Sox getting Floyd and he has really surprised me. A very fair deal for a guy his age and after the success of last year. Nothing too outrageous and Williams didn't lowball him either. Buerhle, Danks and Floyd make for a good three headed monster in that AL Central.

It certainly wasn't a bad move at all. Floyd is a bit scary since last season was his first full season as a starting pitcher so there is risk there that the league will adjust, he had a fluke season, whatever. And the 30 homeruns he gave up do ring a few alarms. However, if last season was legit, then hopefully he would refine his control and stuff and make this contract a bargain for the White Sox. For both sides as you said, it was a smart move. Outside of that last year, I can't see the contract being too bad for the White Sox even if he regresses some.

His ERA did trend up (outside of one month) each month last season which is not good at all, but he did refine his control to the point where he had 26 strikeouts and only six walks in September (versus 15 and 15 in April.) Perhaps he was just working some kinks out over the season.
