White Sox Crede Likely Out For Season

Link: Nathaniel Whalen: Crede elects for surgery, could be done for year

Joe Crede has chosen to have back surgery and, despite what the Sox might be saying right now, he’ll probably be done for the year.

The specific surgery, as he explained to us last week, is thus: Right now he has fluid building up in his back that is pressing against his sciatic nerve and that is causing all the pain. The surgery involves making a small incision in his back, inserting a needle, sucking out all the fluid then sewing him back up. He said it was an in-and-out in one day procedure.

The rehab, however, will keep him off his feet for one month, then he has to rehab the back, then rehab to be baseball ready.

Guys, he’s done for the year.

The interesting thing is that 1) he chose not to have the surgery last season. Best guess is that Scott Boras talked him into doing the rehab instead, which two specialists also recommended. At least one Sox person said he should have had the surgery.

    2) Crede will lose a lot of money at arbitration this winter, he has no trade value right now and he has to prove he’s completely healthy next year if he wants to cash in during his ’08 free agency winter.

All of a sudden, it looks like the Sox will be able to afford Crede if they want him. Now, the question becomes, do they want him?
Tough news for the Sox, even though they probably benefit from this, as playing Crede at less than 100% probably isn't for the best, and taking a look at Fields as a third basemen for the rest of the season certainly can help determine if he can stay there long-term. Plus, they're saving money, as mentioned.

Still, not what you want to see from anyone, and hopefully he can come back next year and repeat his '06 season.

Way to keep your fantasy baseball interests on a low, Witlon.

Anyway, Kenny Williams can have Wilson Betemit from us. Betemit is a Latino. Ozzie Guillen likes Latinos. Make it happen, Kenny.

Isn't Crede a possible free agent next year?

He's is his last year of arbitration next year, if the Sox decide to non-tender him(unlikely unless Fields plays real well), he could be a free agent next year.
