The Cubs have told free agent Nomar Garciaparra to see if he can "find a better fit" with another club, the Chicago Tribune reported Monday.

General manager Jim Hendry told the paper he talked to Arn Tellem, Garciaparra's agent, last week. "Nomar is a guy we all feel terrible about," Hendry told the paper. "He really worked hard to come back [from a severe groin injury] and play at all. He swung the bat well late.

"Unfortunately, he has had a lot of injuries that weren't necessarily his fault. We have kept the door open with Arn Tellem."

Garciaparra batted .283 in 62 games last season while playing third base when he returned from a serious groin injury and replaced the injured Aramis Ramirez.

Hendry told the paper Garciaparra "is in a situation where he should go out and find if there is a better fit. With our situation at third, he's not going to play there, [though] he did fine when he got over there.

"Arn and I had a nice discussion in Palm Springs, and we didn't slam any doors. But we both agreed that he should go out and look around."

The Cubs have been pursuing Atlanta Braves free-agent shortstop Rafael Furcal and re-signed Neifi Perez as a backup plan.

No point in wasting each other's time.
