As you already know, the Cubs know a little something about teen Dominican shortstops. While it's tough to duplicate the success they had when they signed Starlin Castro 4 years ago, the Cubs have signed another top Dominican SS prospect, Enrique Acosta, to a $1.1M contract. Baseball America projected him to get the 9th highest bonus among amateurs, but considering what similar prospects have gotten (read below), the Cubs did an excellent job signing Acosta for what they did.
According to BA, Acosta probably won't stay at SS and will move to 3b, or more likely, a corner outfield position. He has a a shorter swing than bonus babies Ronald Guzman and Elier Hernandez -- and may have more power than [both]. He is not, however, as good an athlete as either of those two players. Don't be surprised if he becomes the best hitter of the 3. The ball jumps off his bat.
Great sensible signing by the Cubs.
