Former Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez is Cubs GM Jim Hendry's top choice for the team's vacant managerial job, according to the Chicago Sun-Times' Gordon Wittenmyer.
Hendry is said to prefer someone with major league managing experience, which would seem to knock Ryne Sandberg out of the running. Other candidates include former Indians manager Eric Wedge, who has already been interviewed for the job, interim manager Mike Quade and current Yankees manager Joe Girardi, if he decided he doesn't want to stay in New York.
Don't be surprised if Sandberg manages elsewhere if Hendry doesn't give him the job. Apparently he has turned down offers because he wants the Cubs job.

Bob Brenly out of running for Cubs' job. But why? | HardballTalk

Because he's stupid...that's why. He sucks.

Because Brenly knows he's not a "retooling" manager. He can't win without a stacked roster.
