    Cubs Cubs Sign Xavier Nady

X-factor: Cubs to add Nady to mix | MLB.com: News

Club reportedly close to signing veteran to one-year deal

The Cubs have reached a tentative one-year deal with free agent Xavier Nady, according to Yahoo! Sports, a move that would provide some power and depth to Chicago's outfield.

Nady's contract won't be official until he passes a physical, according to the report. A Cubs spokesperson said no announcement about a player move was imminent. According to SI.com, the deal is worth $3.3 million plus $2 million in incentives based on games played.

The 31-year-old played only seven games for the Yankees in 2009 before undergoing the second Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgery of his career. His last healthy season was 2008, when Nady hit .305 with 25 home runs and 97 RBIs for the Pirates and Yankees.

Nady joins an experienced Cubs outfield and could see most of his action as a right-handed foil to left-handed hitting right fielder Kosuke Fukudome. The Cubs already signed free agent Marlon Byrd to play center field, and Alfonso Soriano is a fixture in left.
    Pending the physical of course.

I like this signing though. 3.3 isn't bad for the possible production Nady brings. I know he's coming off his 2nd tommy john, which scares me a bit. But If he can stay healthy, this should prove to be a very smart move.

If he can return to health, this could be real nice. But I agree, this makes them even more right handed.

I don't think the whole idea of lineups being balanced with R/L hitters is as important as it seems. The team was very right handed in 08 and they were the best team in the NL that season.

I think it only matters if the splits say they do. If it is obvious that these RH hitters have a hard time with RH pitchers, then there would be a problem.

How well have the Cubs been doing against RHP?

Great signing. Compare this with the Ankiel signing with Kansas City, and this is a steal for the Cubbies.

The lineup hits pretty well against RHP.

The Cubs have also signed Corner IF Chad Tracy to a MLC.

Not quite thread worthy, but I thought I would mention it.

The Cubs bench just got a little bit better and should take over for Micah Hoffpauir.
