Well they knew they screwed up. You had the Padres GM who even said pubically "We're not trying to hit a home run anymore, just a double." in terms of what they want back. Once the Cubs thing died, they claimed they were content starting 2009 with Peavy. Which to an extent may be true. They may wait till the deadline.

But basically it's known they're willing to talk Peavy behind closed doors. It's all just for show to try and gain some leverage back.
