    Cubs vs. Marlins - 6/14 - Preview

Another young gun starts for Cubs
    Florida (32-29) at Chicago (33-29), 7:05 p.m. CT

    By Carrie Muskat / MLB.com

The Chicago Cubs have been outscored, 17-2, in the last two games. It's time to get back on track.
Sergio Mitre will start for the Cubs in Game 2 on Tuesday night of this three-game series against the Florida Marlins, under the lights at Wrigley Field.

Mitre threw the best game of his young career in his last start against Toronto. Let's see what he does next.

"This is what you hope for -- a calmness, coolness and high level of competitiveness at the same time," Cubs manager Dusty Baker said when asked about the young pitchers like Mitre and John Koronka.

Koronka took the hit Monday night, giving up six runs on seven hits over 4 1/3 innings in a 9-1 loss to the Marlins. In his last start, Mitre threw seven scoreless innings against the Blue Jays and gave up two hits. He struck out six.

"It's about time," Mitre said after that game.

    Pitching matchup
    FLA: RHP Josh Beckett

    • 7-4, 3.13 ERA in 2005
    • 0-1, 9.00 ERA vs. CHC in 2003

    CHC: RHP Sergio Mitre
    • 1-1, 4.88 ERA in 2005
    • 0-0, 21.60 ERA in 2004 vs. FLA

    Player to watch
Todd Walker will likely be back in the lineup Tuesday against the righty Beckett. The second baseman was 6-for-11 and scored five runs in the three games against Boston. He's batting .297 in June.

    Quotable
"I see them as a very good team that we have to beat. I don't live in the past. I care not to relive the past, the hurt, the pain of that time. They beat us. They took it from us. It's not that they did it in some demonstrative style or form. They just went out and played baseball." -- Baker on facing the Marlins, who beat the Cubs in the 2003 NL Championship Series

    Quick hits
Kerry Wood gave up one run on three hits and two walks over three innings for Triple-A Iowa on Monday night. He also tripled and scored a run in his first rehab outing. Wood threw 46 pitches before rain delayed the game. He is expected to make another Minor League rehab start. ... Michael Barrett is 1-for-6 lifetime against Beckett, Henry Blanco is 1-for-5, Jeromy Burnitz is 3-for-13, Todd Hollandsworth 1-for-3, Neifi Perez 1-for-2, and Walker 1-for-1. ... Miguel Cabrera is 1-for-2 lifetime against Mitre and Paul Lo Duca and Juan Pierre are both 1-for-1.

    14-0 Cubs win.

Mitre pitched a much better game than the last one against the Jays, a 5-hit shut out, only 3 fly balls. He extended his scoreless inning to 16. He even had 2 hits in the game. The Cubs offense took advantage with wind blowing out, with 4 HRs, 2 from Aramis, 1 from Lee and Barrett each. Nice to be back on track after being blown out by Willis.

actually, the game against the blue jays was more impressive. while he didnt go the distance in that game, he did go 7 innings of two hit ball against the best pitcher in the american league in a very close game.
