I think it has to do with more pitching before they even get to the bigs. You didn't have the minor league systems like you do now back in the day. If a kid is pitching from little leagues. If he's good and used alot. I mean Prior pitched a lot of innings for USC. He'd been throwing since he was a little kid. He had a ton of mileage on that arm.

After making a deep run in the playoffs in 2003. Baker shouldn't of had Wood throwing 100+ pitches in APRIL of 2004. Wood who finally looked healthy, here's why he fell off. Look at how he ended 03', what he did in 04' and the 05' start. His arm was burnt out:

    2003 Post Season:
    Sep 30: 124
    Oct 5: 117
    Oct 10: 109
    Oct 15: 112

    2004 Pitch Counts
    April 5: 95 Pitches
    April 11: 105 Pitches
    April 17: 131 Pitches
    April 24: 111 Pitches
    April 30: 110 Pitches
    May 5: 116 Pitches
    May 11: 38 Pitches

    (injury)

    July 11: 80 Pitches
    July 18: 86 Pitches
    July 23: 101 Pitches
    July 28: 99 Pitches
    Aug 3: 110 Pitches
    Aug 8: 92 Pitches
    Aug 14: 121 Pitches
    Aug 22: 75 Pitches
    Aug 27: 87 Pitches
    Sep 1: 117 Pitches
    Sep 10: 97 Pitches
    Spe 16: 118 Pitches
    Sep 21: 104 Pitches
    Sep 26: 120 Pitches
    Oct 1: 106 Pitches

    First three starts of 2005:
    April 8: 104 Pitches
    April 13: 112 Pitches
    April 18: 95 Pitches

The guy looked so great in Spring Training of 04' many picked him to win the Cy Young. After pitching with high pitch counts in 03', his arm just couldn't hold that early work load. Seriously they shouldn't have let him go over 100 pitches till June in 04'. Keep the work load light, because he had a history of injury history. You want him healthy in Sept/Oct again, not go all ball out in April/May.

Oh and again. Thank you Dusty Baker for all you've done with my Cubs. We can still see the work you left behind. Good luck Homer Bailey.
